Local health unit reports at least one new case of HIV/AIDS every year

The HKPR health unit reports one or two new cases of HIV/AIDS every year in our district.

Today is World AIDS Day and our local health unit is encouraging residents to be aware of the risks, and take precautions.

The theme across the world today is “Getting to zero” to represent zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination towards people who may have the disease and zero AIDS related deaths.

According to the health unit, HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sex with someone who is HIV positive, sharing needles or equipment for injecting drugs, or using unsterilized needles for tattooing, skin piercing or acupuncture.
