The Peterborough Police Service has confirmed a GTA man is dead after a plane crash in the city of Peterborough this morning.

Police say a small Piper aircraft crashed just after 1:00am, on Landsdowne Street and High Street.

The man in his twenties flying the plane, which was allegedly stolen from a rural airport in the GTA, was pronounced dead on scene.

The identity of the victim has been confirmed, although police are waiting to provide that information until his family is notified.

A police investigation continues to determine the events leading up to the theft, and the York Regional Police Service has been called in to help.

The Transport Safety Board is helping to determine the cause of the crash.
