From the relief organization, James Sedgewick recently presented to Madawaska Valley’s council the Red Cross’ role and capabilities in the event of an emergency. The Red Cross could support the province or municipalities in setting up evacuation centres, with around 800 beds and supplies housed in Ottawa. The organization also has supplies in Pembroke, Bancroft and Huntsville. The Red Cross is an auxiliary service, with about 90% of its workforce volunteers. Council agreed having that resource in the region is critical in the event of an emergency.
