Phragmities still a main concern for wetlands in cottage country

An aggressive alien is in your backyard right now and you might not even realize it.

Invasive Species Awareness week kicks off today and local non-charitable organization Georgian Bay Forever is revisiting the topic of Phragmities.

The European alien plant has been choking out wetlands in areas like Haliburton, Muskoka and Parry Sound for years say organization officials.

The plant has a few ways to push out the native species and claim land for itself including a quick and dense growth cycle and releasing chemicals into the soil that are harmful to other plants.

Georgian Bay Forever is one of a few groups in the area funding research on ways to control the spread and eventually rid the wetlands of Cottage Country of this invasive plant species.

You can find more details on how to identify and deal with Phragmities here.
