Highlands East says proposed changes to Bill 148 a pleasant surprise

Bill 148 may have less of an impact on Highlands East than originally anticipated.

The province is considering amendments to exclude essential workers, such as firefighters, snowplow operators and utility workers from the on call provision of the bill.

The bill currently says any employee is required to be paid for being on call whether they work or not.

One example given was if they had to pay snowplow operators for being on call, it would have cost the municipality more than $13,000.

Mayor Dave Burton says he is pleasantly surprised the province is considering amending the bill.

Burton adds this will make budget preparations for 2018 much easier.

According to a municipal financial statement, the increase of the minimum wage to $14 an hour by January 1st will add over $11,000 in expenses.
