Expect a cold Christmas in Haliburton County

Christmas is likely to be very cold this year in Haliburton County.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says arctic air may start moving into Haliburton during the second week of December and it will be sticking around for a while.

Coulson says this push of cold air is coming from something called a Polar Vortex up at the North Pole.

Coulson says this sudden cold snap mixed in with the warmer waters in Georgian Bay could lead to more lake effect snow storms as well.

These types of storms have brought 30 c.m. of snowfall or more to Haliburton.

Last year, a similar system of arctic air made its way into Ontario around mid-December bringing temperatures down to minus 20 with the windchill.
