Minden Hills learns about tools available to help increase affordable housing in the township

Minden Hills wants to bring more affordable properties to the township.

Council learned about some of the tools being suggested by the Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton Housing Corporation at today’s  meeting.

The housing corporation has 25 suggestions, including tax deductions for affordable housing properties and other financial incentives based on how many rental units are constructed.

Mayor Brent Devolin says he feels those tools will be helpful.

Devolin also says the shortage of rental units in Minden is a problem but says there are ways to encourage developers to build multi-unit properties.

According to the housing corporation’s numbers, affordable rent is $987 or less.
