OPP reminding boaters to keep life jackets in mind when you hit the water

Life jackets are not an option, they’re a life-saving necessity.

The OPP wants to remind both visitors and locals in Haliburton you need to have your PFD when you’re out on the lake or river at all times this summer. Central Region OPP Sergeant Peter Leon says even paddle boarders could end up in a situation where a life jacket could save your life.

Leon says a life jacket isn’t an option, it’s a legal requirement. He says every person on any type of watercraft needs to have a proper-sized life jacket on board.

While boaters aren’t specifically required to wear them Leon says everyone should still strongly consider doing that. He says there are situations where boaters are knocked unconscious or just don’t have time to pull on the PDF if the boat tips or crashes.

He says while the OPP can’t be watching 24/7 there are officers constantly patrolling Haliburton’s waterways checking to make sure everyone is safe on the water.
