Big Brothers Big Sisters month raises awareness about need for volunteers

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kawartha Lakes-Haliburton is reminding us that September is Big Brother Big Sister month across Canada. Executive Director Jim DeFlorio says the program benefits children across Haliburton County from single parent homes.

There are seven volunteers in Haliburton County who dedicate three to four hours a week mentoring their little brother or sister. DeFlorio says there are two programs available – the traditional community-based one to one program, or the site-based in-school mentoring.

The Big Brother Big Sister program helps kids reach their full potential, says DeFlorio. He says September is their opportunity to show appreciation to the volunteers and bring awareness to the importance of the program.

DeFlorio says it has always been a struggle to get volunteers in the Haliburton County area. There are currently four children in the area on the waiting list for the program. To get more information and how to volunteer, call 705-324-6800 or visit their website.
