Tornado watch in effect

There’s a tornado watch for our area.

Environment Canada says it’s in effect for Haliburton, Minden, Southern Haliburton County, Oxtongue Lake, Fort Irwin and Northern Haliburton County. That’s in addition to the severe thunderstorm warning the area is under as well.

The agency says the conditions are right for the thunderstorms and an isolated tornado to form. The threat will end early this evening.

Environment Canada says this is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area, it is recommended you go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

The My Haliburton Now Newsroom is monitoring the situation and will keep you updated.
