School Kids Dressing Up in Purple to Raise Awareness on Children’s Rights

All over the province, school kids are checking their closet for purple clothes for a great cause.

The Children’s Aid Society’s and the school boards of Ontario are using purple clothes to raise awareness about the rights and safety of children and youth. This event happens every year, with the date for this year being October 24th.

Aside from encouraging people to wear purple, the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies has made resources available for schools to teach their student body about the rights that they have. The resources are geared to the various ages of students in school, from Junior Kindergarten all the way through to Grade 12 students. in total there are four lesson plans available for students in Kindergarten to Grade five, and another four for students grade six to 12.

The topics of the lesson plans for the younger kids teaches through games the rights that children have. The lessons for the older kids go over the concept that you are not alone, the importance of self-esteem, what classifies as a healthy relationship,  and the reasons to ask for help.
