Teen charged with trio of attempted car thefts

A Haliburton County teen is facing several charges following a series of car thefts over the span of a week.

Haliburton Highlands O.P.P. confirmed a teen has been arrested after three different car thefts. According to Staff Sergeant Lianne Spong, officers were investigating a report of a stolen car in Haliburton Village when the police received a second stolen vehicle call on Victoria Street. Spong tells My Haliburton Now.com the young person had abandoned the first vehicle and attempted to steal the second when the owner managed to detain the youth inside the car until police arrived.

Spong says the young person, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and theft over $5,000.

The first car theft happened over the weekend when a car was taken and abandoned. Sergeant Spong says further investigation is underway into all three of the thefts.
