The lights are not going off after all – Ontario passes bill stopping power generation strike

Power in Haliburton County is going to stay on thanks to the province passing a bill.

Haliburton’s MPP Laurie Scott was at the forefront of “keeping the lights on.” Scott and the Energy Minister Greg Rickford announced yesterday that the Government of Ontario had called the Legislators back from holiday break and got a bill passed preventing an Ontario Power Generation work stoppage.

According to the province, a work stoppage would have an impact on communities across Ontario because the Independent Electricity System Operator found that Ontario would not have enough power, meaning rolling brown and blackouts.

The conservatives said in their joint statement, the bill made it so the matter is going to arbitration. “We want to see a fair deal reached between the parties,” said Scott, adding “Our proposed legislation will remove the risk of widespread power outages and allow dispute resolution to happen appropriately.”

The OPG employees have been without a collective bargaining agreement since March.
