All four municipalities writing Fedeli urging protection during OMPF review

With the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund under review, all of Haliburton County is asking for protection.

Haliburton County and it’s four municipalities have been encouraged to write a letter to the Minister of Finance Vic Fedeli. The goal of the letters is to ask the Minister to continue to support the rural communities with some kind of funding.

Liz Danielson, the recently appointed Warden of Haliburton County, says she attended the Eastern Ontario Warden’s Caucus and at the caucus, it was decided that all municipalities should pen a letter to Ontario’s Finance Minister with hopes of ensuring the funding does not dry up.

Algonquin Highlands Mayor, Carol Moffatt, notes the timing of these letters are critical as the review is underway and if they wait until the review is done that could seriously hurt the township. As well, the mayor says the reality is, if the funding were to decrease or go away entirely, the township would be forced to raise taxes. She explains that OMPF is a big part of the income that goes into the town and without it that a lot of money to be made up elsewhere. According to the letter written from Haliburton County, the county and by proxy the municipalities received in excess of $7,000,000 from the OMPF.

Warden Danielson says at the caucus, there was a sense that Haliburton County would be protected but notes that was just a sense, not a for sure.

Haliburton County and four municipalities are all expected to send letters to Queen’s Park.
