Algonquin Highlands Fire Department Offering Safety tips for during winter storms

The Algonquin Highlands Fire Department is offering tips to stay safe through winter storms.

With freezing rain in the forecast for tomorrow, the fire department wants people to be as safe as possible. Algonquin Highlands Fire took to Twitter last week, offering up a variety of tips from the National Fire Protection Association.

NFPA recommends that people check their smoke alarms monthly to make sure that they are working. As well, it is suggested that you check your carbon monoxide detector regularly.

Another tip to make sure you’re safe through a winter storm is to plan two ways out of your home in case of an emergency. And whenever possible clear the ice and snow away from those escape routes.

To make sure that firefighters can get to you as soon as possible, NFPA suggests that you make your house number visible from the road to make it easier for them to make it to you.

A suggestion to deal with power outages, NFPA wants folks to gather flashlights and other battery operated lights to avoid the use of candles any other open flames.

NFPA says that as storms or bad weather roll through the area, it is a good idea to keep checking the weather online or with the radio.

Given how remote and isolated parts of Haliburton County are, NFPA suggests that people check on the neighbours and anyone else in need.

In terms of general safety, NFPA says that if you are using a generator it needs to be used outdoors, even if the door is open. As well it is important to be ready if the heat goes out, NFPA suggests wearing layers and blankets and if you are burning things for heat keep flammable objects three feet away.
