Mental Health Association set to talk cannabis use in teens at event in Peterborough

The Canadian Mental Health Association is encouraging parents and youth to talk about pot use.

Coming up next week is an event called “Cannabis and our youth” which the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge branch of CMHA says is designed to engage parents, teachers and caregivers on the use of cannabis in youth.

According to the CMHA, the event is going on at Adam Scott CVI in Peterborough, but it is open for any concerned individuals to attend. During the meeting, organizers say it will focus on a number of things including cannabis use now versus before, how cannabis use impacts the brain, the statistics and risk attached to youth using cannabis, and some guidelines to lower the risk while using.

The organizers say they are also expecting to go over ways for parents to talk to youth about their use of cannabis, and an overview of why teens smoke pot.

All of the information provided at the meeting, CMHA says, has been prepared by the Cannabis and Youth Clinical Education Team which is a group made up of doctors, medical residents, and staff with CMHA HKPR. The education team was created in 2017 following the announcement that recreational cannabis was going to become legal in Canada.

The meeting starts at 7:00pm on February 26th.
