Algonquin Highlands to look into expanding parking on Big and Little Hawk Lake Road

The Township of Algonquin Highlands is looking to extra parking for Big and Little Hawk Lake roads.

To contend with the amount of traffic that parks along both Hawk Lake roads, Adam Thorn, the Operations Manager in Algonquin Highlands, is looking into getting some extra land to handle the parking concerns.

Thorn asked the permission of the council to connect with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to get some of the lands that they own along Little Hawk Lake Road, which he says could be converted into extra parking. According to Thorn, it seems as though the use of that road for parking goes up each year. Another concern with the parking on both roads is the fact that it is used by 300 plus water access users that park there.

Another suggestion of Thorn was moving an outhouse and cleaning up the area to add some more spaces along BIg Hawk Lake Road. As well, Thorn says that in discussions with the county, the county is considering widening the road.

Thorn told the council that this idea is very much just in the planning stages and he would like to conduct a land survey to figure out how far they can expand. Thorn says that although you can’t foresee an increase in traffic, it would benefit the town to have the cars off the road.

Council voted to allow Thorn to connect with the MNRF and look into pricing out the cost of surveying the land.
