January fire calls down by half compared to last year in Algonquin Highlands

Algonquin Highlands Fire Department saw half as many calls this year as they did last January.

In January of 2019, the three fire stations in Algonquin Highlands have seen eight calls for service which is half of the total they had by this time last year.

According to a report provided by Fire Chief Mike Cavanaugh, the Stanhope station was the busiest station in both 2018 and 2019. Last year, that station fielded 13 calls, as opposed to the 6 they had responded to this year.

The Dorset station only had one call for service this January whereas last year they had six calls for service in 2018.

At the Oxtongue station, it was a slow month both years. Last year they had zero calls and this year it was only one call.

Cavanaugh’s report shows that the highest call volume was for medical assist calls. This year the Stanhope station had three and last year that number was higher at seven calls. The second highest number of calls was a tie between rescue calls and other, which both had one in the month of January.

All told, the year to date calls for Algonquin Highlands Fire Department was down by 11 compared to 2018.
