Officials urge people to get ready for storm

How do you prepare for a big winter storm that includes ice rain and wind?

While the storm expected to hit the Muskoka area may not be punching a snow wallop the wind could be the big story.

With sustained wind predicted to be in the 95 to 100 km per hour range, it is almost a given that trees will fall and hydro will be affected. How fast power is restored is very dependent on how many line breaks there are. With the scope of this storm officials are recommending that people get what has been coined, a 72-hour kit organized.

A lot of properties in Muskoka have wells or lake water that requires power to get water to the house. If the power goes out you will need water to flush toilets, cook and drink. Buying bottled water is one way to go, but you can fill your tub for flushing water, using a bucket to transfer it.

It is a kit that on short notice, will keep you going through a power outage for a day or two.

People should try and fill up their vehicles ahead of the storm as well, in case you have to leave the area or even stay warm in your vehicle.
