One person dead following a capsized boat incident in Highlands East

HIGHLANDS EAST, ON -The O.P.P. is looking into how an Oshawa resident lost their life on MacCaslim Lake.

According to the police, around 5:00 pm on Saturday, officers and other emergency services were dispatched to calls of a capsized boat on the Highlands East lake.

The three people on the boat were fishing when it flipped. Two of the people were able to use a life jacket floating in the water with them to get to the shore. The third person went under the water and did not resurface.

Sunday, members of the O.P.P.’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit found the missing man. The person was later identified as Jeffrey Daniel ST-CYR, a 35-year-old from Oshawa, Ontario.

Through the investigation, the O.P.P. learned that the boat had the appropriate safety equipment but none of the boaters were wearing life jackets.
