Abbey Gardens adding hydroponics

Story by Rick Lowes, MyHaliburtonNow.com

HALIBURTON, ON- Home grown vegetables year round.

Abbey Gardens has announced that with the help of some funding from the Haliburton County Development Corporation they have added a hydroponic growing unit to their property.

Abbey Gardens spokesperson Heather Reid says that introducing the capacity to grow fresh vegetables 365 days a year will result in a significant ripple effect of innovation opportunities for the Haliburton Highlands.

The growing unit called the Growcer, at full capacity will yield up to 230 pounds of vegetables per week and Abbey Gardens will launch a community-supported agricultural program in December and supply restaurants in the area with fresh vegetables from the unit.
