COTTAGE COUNTRY, ON – A scam is going around using Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit’s (SIU) number and the organization is warning the public to hang up and report it.
In a release from the organization, it said the call is coming from 1-800-787-8529. It added in some cases anyone who answers is told their Social Insurance Number has been compromised and if they don’t press “1” or “2” they may be charged or jailed.
The SIU said they do not contact people by phone for this type of personal information.
Anyone who has had a call like this should report it immediately to Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and register their number on Canada’s National Do Not Call List.
