Bus Safety Week in Haliburton

HALIBURTON, ON – Drivers are being reminded to be extra cautious around school buses and follow the rules of the road.

Dave Freeman from the Haliburton Bus Lines spoke on the issue in honour of Bus Safety Week. He said warning lights on a school bus tell other motorists that the bus is preparing to stop.

According to Freeman, once the bus comes to a complete stop, all other traffick must too. Any drivers approaching a bus with flashing lights has to give 20 metres space between the two vehicles. Motorists can’t move until the lights are turned off.

Freeman added that some bus drivers will put on their hazard lights before a hidden stop around a bend in the road or when they notice a large vehicle approaching from behind. He said drivers who do that are just being courteous and that it shouldn’t be expected.
