New wage subsidy legislation passed and CERB payments going out

Wage subsidy for businesses will kick in very soon.

Local MP Jamie Schmale says Parliament met on Saturday and passed new wage subsidy legislation.

And the CERB program payments have started this week. The MP explains that the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit is for employees and for individuals, those that have been laid off or are caring for a sick relative or family member because of COVID-19.

MP Schmale says the support is there “so people aren’t losing their house or their roof”.

The MP says there are still some kinks in the list of those that qualify. Currently seasonal workers that haven’t been able to start work because of COVID-19, and municipal politicians, cannot apply for emergency funding.

Schmale says the Prime Minister has indicated that another support program could be on the way to help address these situations.
