Over half a million dollars in Grow Grant funding for local Alzheimer’s Society

PETERBOROUGH, ON – July 15, 2020 – Some heartwarming news was announced this week for local residents whose lives are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias. The Ontario Trillium Foundation has funded the Alzheimer Society of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland, and Haliburton with a $552,000 Grow Grant to expand their popular program, Minds in Motion.

Announced at the organization’s AGM on July 15th to cheers and happy tears, the Alzheimer Society’s Executive Director, Leslie Parham, explained the impact of this funding. “The Grow Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation is going to ensure and support the long term growth of Minds in Motion. We are beyond thrilled to receive OTF’s support, and are looking forward to working with them to bring the program to many more communities within our region”, she said, “I also want to acknowledge that we wouldn’t be ready for this step without the incredible generosity of some of our local funders such as the Northumberland United Way, Kawartha Lakes 100 Women Who Care, the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, and the Campbellford/Seymour Community Foundation to whom we owe a debt of gratitude.”

This funding comes just in time, as people living with dementia and their caregivers are particularly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Already facing isolation prior to the pandemic, the necessary social distancing protocols have been profoundly destabilizing for people living with dementia. At the same time, caregivers are further separated from family, friends and other support networks. To respond to this, the Alzheimer Society has begun offering almost all its programs online, including the Minds in Motion program twice weekly.

Says Marion, a participant of the program, “Our Minds in Motion sessions have become one of the times we look forward to each week…Minds in Motion not only keeps us moving as we age, but provides us pleasure and encouragement as we move forward on our dementia journey.”
“This is common feedback for the program,” notes Jenn Stubbert, the program’s coordinator. “Our clients not only improve their fitness, but also find a safe, welcoming group of friends who they can connect with every week.”

The Alzheimer Society of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland, and Haliburton are welcoming new participants into the Minds in Motion program. If you or someone you know is living with dementia, the organization is encouraging you to get in touch. “Currently, all of our services are free of cost,” explains Parham. “Most of our services will remain free once restrictions are lifted. Any program fees we have are quite nominal, and only in place to cover basic costs.” The organization receives about two thirds of its revenue from the Central East Local Health Integration Network, but is required to fundraise for the rest of its work, including the Minds in Motion program.
