We’ve had some bitterly cold temps these past couple of days, which can be just as bad for your pet as it is for you. Inspector Scott Sylvia with the OSPCA says of you have a dog that stays outside, you need to make sure it has a proper shelter under provincial law.

Sylvia says your shelter also must have a flapping door way for easy access. Whether you have a cat or a dog, they don’t always have access to appropriate shelter. Sylvia says they charged a couple last year because of the conditions they left their two dogs in, while living on the 44th floor of a high-rise.

You should limit your pets’ time outside in bad weather conditions. Sylvia says if you’re dog our outdoor cat are going to be outside you need to consider where they’re walking. They could be walking on driveways or roads with salt.

If you’re a dog owner, Sylvia says give them the necessary exercise or bathroom break but keep them mostly inside. And if you have a cat, it’s best to keep them inside during the winter.
