SIU clears OPP officers involved in July 2020 Haliburton shooting

The two OPP officers involved in the fatal police-involved shooting in Haliburton Highlands last July have been cleared by the Special Investigations Unit.

The incident on July 15th, 2020, ended with Leslie Hegedus passing away following an exchange of gunfire with two Ontario Provincial Police officers in Dysart.

In a report released earlier this week, SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded there are no reasonable grounds to believe that either officer acted other than lawfully throughout the incident.

And accordingly, Martino writes there is no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in this case, and the file is closed.

Last year the SIU started the investigation following the incident that arose from an altercation Hegedus had with employees that same morning about wearing a mask at Easton’s Valu-Mart in Minden.

Officers then followed the 73-year-old back to his residence, where according to the SIU, OPP claimed shots were fired at the Indian Point Road home.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been a death, serious injury, or allegation of sexual assault.
