Haliburton Legion hosting public Remembrance Day ceremony

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 129 Haliburton will host a public Remembrance Day ceremony.

“The service will be a little abbreviated from what we would do in a regular year,” Legion President Don Pittman tells the MyHaliburtonNow.com newsroom.

The parade from the Haliburton Legion at 719 Mountain Street to the cenotaph will start at 10:30 AM on November 11th. The ceremony will start at 11 at the cenotaph and go on for an hour. Sponsored wreaths will be placed, but not by the people behind the sponsorship because of the COVID-19 protocols in place for the ceremony. It will wrap up by noon and Pittman says refreshments will be served back at the Legion. To enter though, he says you will have to show proof of vaccination.

Pittman asks anyone attending to wear a mask and stand six feet apart from anyone not in their personal bubble.

New this year are customized wreathes. Pittman says legion officials bought a ribbon and printing machine. “We’ve had a lot of people taking us up on that,” he says, adding it will add a personal touch to the ceremony.

“For me, personally, I had a father in the Air Force and an uncle that saw action overseas in the artillery and two grandfathers that both saw service in the First World War,” Pittman says. “It’s kind of a personal thing for me.”

Whether in an executive role, or as a bystander, Pittman says he’s always proud to be part of Remembrance Day ceremonies.
