United Way kicking off annual grants campaign with fundraiser

Our local United Way is kicking off its annual campaign with an event in Haliburton.

The campaign runs October through December, raising money for the organization’s two grants. The kick-off event is Oct. 25 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Community Living Trent Highlands, 73 Victoria St. in Haliburton.

Guest speakers from the local Ontario Early Years Centre will speak about the organization’s impact.

Shantal Ingram, co-executive director of United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes, says the grants help local non-profits address needs in the community.

“Food insecurity is a major problem both in the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County, [as are] housing, emerging needs such as mental health,” says Ingram. “A lot of the major needs in the community, [the] United Way Campaign is to help support agencies that do work in the community that tackles those concerns.”

According to Ingram, the Community Capacity Grant awards between $2,000 and $5,000 to individual organizations.

“They’re for agencies that are looking for a new approach [tackling] a problem, extending a program, developing skills, just to look into the community and what does it need,” says Ingram. “So it could be providing food carts for clients that need assistance with buying groceries, mental health programs, et cetera.”

The Matching Collaborative Grant goes to partnerships of at least three organizations, matching up to $10,000 of the partnership’s own fundraising. Ingram says it’s to encourage non-profits to work together and can be used to “increase their capacity” to do good, or apply for other matching grants.

Jen Bain, Engagement and Marketing Coordinator for the organization, says they’re also looking for volunteers, and local residents to serve on their board of directors.

Admission to the kick-off event is by donation, and you can RSVP to Bain at [email protected] or 705-878-5081. Direct donations to the annual campaign, or information on the grants, can be found here.
