‘Slow down for wildlife’: OPP

Haliburton Highlands OPP is reminding drivers to slow down for wildlife.

It comes after reports of four deer-related crashes in the past 24 hours.

Police advise scanning the road from shoulder to shoulder, passing animals carefully and slowly, using high beams when possible at night, and slowing down in areas marked with yellow wildlife signs.

If an animal does jump out in front of you, brake firmly and stay in your lane, as swerving could make the collision more severe. Officials remind that animals are more active at dusk and dawn, might cross the road in groups, and can be unpredictable.

In the event of a crash, the OPP says to pull off the road and turn on hazard lights, as well as call 9-1-1 if there was any damage done.
