HHOA counting walleye spawns

The Haliburton Highlands Outdoors Association (HHOA) is counting spawning walleye on the Drag River below the Emmerson Dam and the 118 bridge in Haliburton this week.

According to the HHOA, last year approximately 2,100 walleyes were counted at the Drag River site, compared to 1,334 in April 2021. The Drag River location is considered one of the most important walleye spawning sites in the region.

Dan Smith, HHOA President, says the organization hopes to work closely with Parks Canada to ensure the proper water levels and flow rates are maintained during the entire spawning period, to ensure the greatest success for egg incubation, hatching and walleye fry survival and distribution.
