Dog owners are picking up after fido does his or her business in Head Lake Park. Dysart et al Bylaw Enforcement Officer Kristin Boylan told council this week that since installing a dog excrement disposal station in Head Lake Park, a lot less waste is left behind. Each station is also equipped with plastic bags in case dog owners forget to bring one from home. Boylan says a second disposal station was added to the park and two other locations.

Construction of affordable housing units in the county now underway https://www.myhaliburtonnow.com/25477/news/construction-of-affordable-housing-units-in-the-county-now-underway/ Wed, 30 May 2018 18:42:27 +0000 http://www.myhaliburtonnow.com/?p=25477

Twelve families in the county will have an affordable place to live next year. Construction crews are at work building 12 townhome style units at Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton Housing Corporation’s Whispering Pines development. This is the second phase of the project just off County Road 21 by Tim Horton’s.

Minden Hills Mayor Brent Devolin was the County Warden when the second phase was announced last year and says this will help with the rental shortage in the county.

According to housing corporation Manager Hope Lee, approximately 800 people in the county are looking for an affordable place to live. Devolin says he encourages county residents looking for affordable housing not to get discouraged.

There will be an official ribbon-cutting ceremony at Whispering Pines this coming Wednesday.

A youth hub will be in Haliburton across the street from the A.J. Larue Arena. The Point in Time Centre for Children, Youth and Parents purchased the old lighthouse church building on Dysart Avenue across the street from the A.J Larue Arena. The purchase will be funded by a provincial grant. Point in Time Executive Director Marg Cox says once the organization learned it would receive funding, many youths came forward and said the old church is in an ideal location.

Cox adds Point in Time is working with Haliburton Highlands Health Services and other service providers in the county to create the youth hub. Cox adds that their input will be critical to how the hub is developed.

Cox adds the deal to buy the lighthouse closes on July 31st.

Dysart et al’s Deputy Mayor is looking for a promotion.

Andrea Roberts filled her nominations this month with the municipal clerk and is looking to become the first female mayor of Dysart. Roberts was first elected to council as Ward One’s representative for two terms and was voted in as the deputy reeve in 2014. She says she decided in early May that she is ready for the four-year commitment to lead council.

Roberts says she wants to bring a different approach to the mayor’s seat.

Roberts adds she would also look into having more than one council meeting per month.

[audio mp3="http://www.myhaliburtonnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/AR-1.mp3"][/audio]

Roberts will be joined on the ballot by incumbent Mayor Murray Fearrey, who has been a member of council since 1971.

Anyone interested in running for council in any of Haliburton County's townships and municipalities has until July 27th to file their nomination papers.

New skate park in Haliburton ready for skaters, rollerbladers, BMX users and more. https://www.myhaliburtonnow.com/25438/news/new-skate-park-in-haliburton-ready-for-skaters-rollerbladers-bmx-users-and-more/ Tue, 29 May 2018 17:49:54 +0000 http://www.myhaliburtonnow.com/?p=25438

Skateboard enthusiasts now have a new park in the Village of Haliburton. Junction Skate Park opened for the first time over the long weekend.

Dysart et al Recreation and Programs Coordinator Andrea Mueller says even though it’s called a skate park, it’s for all kinds of wheels.

[audio mp3="http://www.myhaliburtonnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Andrea-1.mp3"][/audio]

Mueller adds that the $210,000 project was paid for entirely by donor money, including a land donation by Dysart. She says that the Skate Park Fundraising Committee is still looking to raise another $15,000.

[audio mp3="http://www.myhaliburtonnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Andrea-2.mp3"][/audio]

Mueller adds the extra money will allow the committee to enhance the park. The current concrete structure replaces the old wooden skate park by the Maple Avenue Bridge.
