Ice Safety

As the weather gets colder, the OPP is reminding people about ice safety along lakes and rivers. At least 10 centimetres of clear blue ice is need to walk on it, 20 centimetres for snowmobiles and 30 centimetres for light vehicles. The measurements need to be doubled if the ice is white or isn’t see through. Police say there are many factors which can affect how much weight ice can carry. Ice does not freeze at the same thickness across an entire body of water, so it’s important to check the ice regularly as you move throughout it. They say to avoid slushy or untracked ice, or ice near moving water.
