The Haliburton Highlands OPP is reminding residents to take simple precautions this spring to prevent attracting black bears as they come out of hibernation.

They say bears will travel over 100 kilometers if they have little food which creates human and bear encounters.

They suggest storing garbage in waste containers with a tight-fitting lid and bring bird feeders inside.

Anyone who has an encounter with a bear that’s causing threat to public safety is asked to call the police.
