The Haliburton Highlands OPP will be taking part in a provincial campaign targeting distracted driving.

Throughout the Labour Day long weekend, police will be out on the roads, waterways, and trails, making sure people are not using handheld devices while driving.

The OPP says, for the first time since distracted-driving laws were introduced in 2009, the number of deaths related to distracted-driving may double the number of impaired-driving related deaths this year.

Since mid-August, the OPP has investigated 38 distracted-driving related deaths across the province, compared to 19 related to impaired-driving.

Police are asking you to speak up if you are riding with a distracted driver.
