Our local health unit wants a new film rating system

The Haliburton-Kawartha-Pine Ridge District Health Unit wants to make sure children and teenagers aren’t watching movies with smoking or tobacco products in them.

The joint effort with other health units in the province is part of the Smoke Free Movies Campaign.

Public Health Nurse Karen Taylor says 86 per cent of movies that depicted smoking were rated as OK for youth in 2013.

Parents are being encouraged to lobby provincial politicians to create a film rating system that would deter smoking from being shown in movies aimed at young people.
