The province is now closing the hunting and trapping season of wolves and coyotes in a number of areas, including the Algonquin Provincial Park. This is to protect the population of the Algonquin wolf, which is classified as threatened. The province says it looks too similar to other wolves and coyotes, and so it is now illegal to hunt the canines. However, hunters are able to trap the animals in non-protected areas of the province.
