iTunes can’t be used to pay back taxes

The Haliburton Highlands OPP says there’s a new scam twist involving iTunes gift cards.

Officials say people are receiving calls, or text messages, saying they owe back taxes. The scammers tell the victims to purchase and activate iTunes gift cards, and provide the codes on the back to the fraudsters.

Police say people are losing thousands of dollars because of this tactic. They say if you are asked to pay for any service or product with an iTunes gift card, don’t do it, it’s a scam.

This year, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has received nearly 50 complaints about this.
