Qualifying Residents Can Text 911 in Emergency Situations

Residents in Haliburton County who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired can now communicate with 911 dispatchers.

The Haliburton Highlands OPP says people can now text a 911 operator. Members of the DHHSI (deaf, deafened, hard of hearing or speech impaired) community have to register their cell phones with their wireless carrier to be able to do this.

Texting 911 is not available for everyone. Police are reminding residents the network does not support texts to 911.

Residents in Haliburton County are being asked not to verify this by calling 911, but they can check by calling their cell phone providers.
