Just because there is snow on the ground, doesn’t mean trails are open.
President of the Haliburton County Snowmobile Association Paul Gaudin says usually when there is a delay in opening the trails it is because of water.
This year, the snow came before the frost was on the ground. Gaudin says this means swamps, and waterways are not frozen enough. He says underneath the snow is still dangerous which is hard to tell until you are stuck in it.
Gaudin says groomers are still out on the trails getting them prepared and packing the snow down. Trails will open once they are safe.
