Donald Shortreed is in hospital for treatment of hypothermia and minor injuries after his plan broke through the ice on Little Trading Bay in Dorset.
Haliburton OPP responded to the call at approximately 1:45 p.m. The 1977 Citabria single engine plan was taxiing in when it broke through the ice.
The 80 year-old Algonquin Highlands resident managed to escape from the plane and was treading water when he was rescued.
The incident is currently under investigation by OPP and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
