Highlands East is trying to be greener this year.

The municipality is installing LED streetlights to reduce energy, and maintenance costs. CAO Shannon Hunter says this is going to reduce energy consumption by 45 per cent, and will cut streetlight maintenance costs by 80 per cent. Hunter says this project will also reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by three metric tons every year.

She says the LEDs will only light targeted areas, and won’t have a glare like traditional streetlights.

The installation will be finished mid-January.
