Almost half of the sexual assaults reported in Haliburton County over the last five years didn’t make it to court. That’s the finding of a 20 month long investigation by the Globe and Mail. The paper reports the national number is 19-percent but here in Haliburton County it’s 48 per cent. Kawartha Sexual Assault Center, Executive Director, Sonya Vellenga says the police deemed those reports baseless and unfounded.

Vellenga says victims need to be believed and supported when they share their story.

She says OPP is taking a critical look at this information, and identifying some reports that may need a second look.
