Fire officials warning residents to be safe when opening cottages for the summer

With the May two-four weekend coming up, cottagers are being reminded to be safe when opening up cottages. The Muskoka Lakes Fire Department says seasonal homes are vulnerable to unsafe conditions, like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors dying over the winter.

Chimneys could also be blocked, so the fire department says to make sure they’re clear and to bring up new alarms with batteries.

On top of that, make sure the barbecue is clean before lighting it for the first time this summer, and double check if there is a fire ban before lighting a bonfire. Right now, there’s no ban in effect for the area, however open-air burning during the day isn’t allowed.
