OPP will be on the lookout for impaired boaters

The Ontario Provincial Police are warning boaters to stay out of the water if they are impaired.

The OPP will be patrolling waterways in the district looking for impaired boaters.

Constable Steve Mihills says the May long weekend is a popular party holiday, but boaters still need to be responsible while having fun.

Mihills says you can bring along alcohol in a boat, even if it’s been previously opened, but it needs to be sealed and stored away.

He says the amount of impaired boaters charged was lower than usual last year, but it is still an issue our region.

Mihills encourages anyone who sees an impaired boater to call the police immediately.
