How Ontario’s new Family Caregiver Bill will help you

Ontario’s new Family Caregivers Bill could mean more support for Haliburton County residents. A report released last month showed Haliburton County affected by privatized at-home care. Without services offered at hospitals, the cost of at-home care is too much for many to afford. As a result, people find themselves taking time off to care for family members themselves. A new bill, recently passed in Ontario means you will have job protection when you need to take time off for family needs. The new legislation builds on the existing Family Medical leave, creating three new job-protected leaves:

  • Family Caregiver Leave: up to eight weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for employees to provide care or support to a family member with a serious medical condition.
  • Critically Ill Child Care Leave: up to 37 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to provide care to a critically ill child.
  • Crime-Related Death or Disappearance Leave: up to 52 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for parents of a missing child and up to 104 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for parents of a child who has died as a result of a crime.
