Public Health inspector Bud Ivey told our Health Unit’s Board of Health members that ticks carrying Lyme disease are spreading into Canada due to global warming. According to Ivey, they are spreading at a rate of 46 km per year.
Tick bites are most common for people who hike in the woods and areas with long grass but they can also be transferred to other areas by birds or pets. People are being urged to protect themselves.
Two cases of Lyme disease were reported last year in the area served by the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit.
