M.P. Jamie Schmale asks Minister Navdeep Bains to correct error in granting trademark of the name “Haliburton” to Minden resident

Jamie Schmale wants the federal government to fix a trademark mistake involving the name “Haliburton”.

The Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock M.P. says he shares the sentiments of business owners and residents in the county.

A Minden resident was granted the trademark for Haliburton in February even though the Trade-marks Act says one cannot be granted for geographical places.

Schmale says he has written two letters to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains.

Another part of the act says once a trademark has been granted, it cannot be rescinded.

Schmale says the trademark should not have been granted in the first place.

Schmale isn’t sure when Minister Bains will give him an answer.

Schmale says he has been told the owner of the trademark has been approaching businesses trying to sell Haliburton t-shirts and expects royalties if products are sold with the name Haliburton.
