There is a human case of West Nile virus in the health unit’s district.

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit says it cannot disclose where the person is due to confidentiality reasons.

The H.K.P.R. region covers Kawartha Lakes, as well as the counties of Haliburton and Northumberland.

This is the first human case of West Nile in the health unit’s region in five years, which can infect humans if they are bitten by an infected mosquito.

H.K.P.R. is suggesting people wear long sleeved clothing when outside and use bug spray containing deet.

The health unit also recommends removing standing water on your property such as in bird baths and evestroughs .

Batches of mosquitos were trapped in Haliburton County on July 6 and tested positive for the virus.

The health unit also says most people who get West Nile do not experience symptoms, but if they do, they are flu-like.
