Highlands East house party results in break & enter charges

A 16 year-old Minden male has been charged with break & enter and mischief over $5000. Haliburton Highlands OPP report a large house party, advertised through social media, occurred at a cottage in Highlands East on May 17 after youths entered the residence by breaking a window. An estimated 150 people were in attendance, the majority under the age of 19.

The party was held without the knowledge of the property owners, and OPP are saying many of the youths were not aware they were committing an offence by being at the residence.

According to police reports, evidence including DNA recovered from the scene have been sent for analysis. Police estimate damage to the residence in the amount of $25,000.

The investigation is still ongoing and OPP presume more charges will be laid.

OPP constable Paul Potter is reminding parents to be aware of the location and type of event their child is attending. OPP are asking residents to constantly observe for suspicious vehicles, persons and activity in their area.
